Birthday “Paw-ty” for Cat Symbolizes Need for Adopting Senior Pets
Orphans of the Storm encourages area residents to get acquainted with adoptable senior cats on Saturday afternoon, January 28

There will be a cat appropriate birthday cake and cookies for the human visitors, but most importantly, Capricorn, an affectionate feline, will be there, ready for adoption after 530 days living at Orphans of the Storm (OOTS) animal shelter, Riverwoods.
Capricorn is among the many senior and long-stay cats that can be visited on Saturday, January 28, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (or anytime during Orphans of the Storm business hours). “He is sweet, snuggly, affectionate, and ready to be the light of your life,” said Isabel Mitchell, Adoption Counselor, OOTS. “We are making every effort to impress for this sweet ginger in hopes that his next birthday is spent in his forever home and not at the shelter.”
During this event, not only will Capricorn's adoption fees be waived, Mitchell added, “the fees of all his friends, who will also be at his “paw-ty,” will also be waived. His friends include any cat that is seven years of age and older or has been at the shelter for three months or longer.”

Cats with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) Are Very Adoptable
OOTS is starting off the New Year by shining a light on our very own Capricorn. “After all, it is Capricorn's astrological season,” Mitchell points out.
”Cats like Capricorn can be overlooked because of their FIV+ (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) status. FIV+ cats can have long, healthy lives and are very resilient. They can even have other cat siblings. Capricorn loves wand toys, crunchy treats, and head scratches," said Mitchell explained.
"We believe part of our role as an animal shelter is to share the latest veterinary information with the community. There was a time FIV+ cats were routinely euthanized because of the fear of spreading the virus,” said Sandy De Lisle, Head of Development and Community Outreach, OOTS.
“At Orphans of the Storm,” De Lisle continued, “we follow the recommendations of the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), which indicate that adopting FIV+ cats into a home with cats without FIV is safe for resident felines and humans. We hope that there's an adopter out there who will see past Capricorn's FIV+ and diabetic status and give him a chance."
