Chinese Porcelain - A Millenium of Design

Over time, the proper name of those who invented a product can become in the collective vernacular the name of the product.  For instance, Kleenex for tissue, Xerox for copiers and in the west, china for fine hard paste (clay) fired and glazed porcelain; first produced in China well over a thousand years ago!

Since it was first exported to Europe, "china" has been a highly prized addition to the dining tables and display cabinets of the most sophisticated families in the west too.  Tea cups, saucers, plates, vases and other items have been in constant use over the centuries, still given to newlyweds as wedding presents.
Today, fine porcelain from China is widely collected and valued not only by those in the USA and Europe, but China is re-claiming their heritage and bringing home their ancestral treasures.  But those who wish to acquire a fine piece of antique or vintage Chinese porcelain can still find a little bit of Asia to decorate their home.

What kind of china or porcelain should I be looking for?  First, find something that you like, that "talks to you".  Something of a single color in blue, dark red, green, yellow or other color could easily fit into any Mid-Century setting.  Want something more decorative and "Ralph Lauren-like", blue and white pieces can be found in a wide variety of items and looks good with traditional and modern decor.  Are you more of a collector or someone who appreciates classic pieces?  There are finely crafted pieces in thick porcelain or as thin as egg shells in a variety of colors, many hand painted with great detail and often with real gold trim.

Owning a piece of history is easy to do.  Drop by DB Gallery in Glenview and see a nice selection of china...before it all goes back to China!
