D'Amico Passes Measure Helping Police Keep Track of Plates on The Road

State Representative John D’Amico passed legislation last week aimed to help law enforcement keep track of plates on the road by creating a universal special license plate.

“Specialty license plates create funds that go toward worthy causes and programs for Illinois’ organizations,” D’Amico said. “But with over 100 specialty license plates on the road, these plates are making it difficult for law enforcement to keep record of duplicate plates.”

House Bill 1081, sponsored by D’Amico, creates the Universal Special License Plate. This universal plate, designed by the Secretary of State, will have a space on the plate for each organization’s unique decal. Organizations will have authority over the design, sale, and distribution of their decals. Current specialty plates will remain as long as the number of applicants remains above 2,000. If the number of applicants for the plates falls below 1,000 for 2 calendar years, the plates will be exchanged for universal plates. All military plates will be exempt from these terms.

“Implementing a universal plate will help law enforcement solve their issues with keeping track of plates and ensure that innocent drivers aren’t ticketed,” D’Amico said. “This legislation is a step in the right direction to help our law enforcement patrolling the roads.”

House Bill 1081 passed the House and awaits consideration in the Senate.
