Dold/Schneider Mental Health forum

Dold/Schneider mental health views

Tenth Congressional District U.S. Rep. Robert Dold and former U.S. Brad Schneider discussed
a range of mental health and social services October 14 at Election 2016: A Candidate Forum
on Mental Health and Social Services, sponsored by National Alliance on Mental Illness-Cook
County North Suburban and Mental Health America-North Shore.
The forum, held at the Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center, attracted more than 100
attendees from across the 10th District and addressed more than a dozen questions that had
been prepared by the cosponsors and submitted by attendees.
Mark Heyrman of the University of Chicago Law School and the Mental Health Summit
moderated the event, which addressed mental health coverage, the Affordable Care Act,
Medicaid expansion, supportive housing programs, opioid and drug/substance abuse concerns,
and related issues. Larry Yellen of FOX-32 WFLD hosted the event.
“The sponsors are tremendously grateful to the candidates for their participation, and for
addressing the broad range of policy issues presented in such a substantive, civil way,” said
NAMI-CCNS Executive Director Nancy Carstedt.
“They demonstrated a great deal of knowledge on the issues so critical to mental health
advocates in general and 10th District voters in particular.”
“The candidates clearly care about mental health issues, and their records demonstrate a
commitment to the issues we and NAMI-CCNS care so deeply about,” said Josefina Alvarez,
Ph.D., MHA-NS Board President.
“We look forward to continued advocacy work on behalf of North Shore residents with our
elected officials, and to continued partnerships with NAMI-CCNS.”
