Many myths abound about children who have autism. Some of them may even seem complimentary or positive, including the myths that autistic children all have high IQs and are savants in their areas of interest. However, painting all autistic children with broad strokes can actually put unnecessary pressure and stress on these children. It is incredibly important to keep in mind that autism spectrum disorders are indeed comprised of a wide range of potential symptoms, and that despite having a common diagnosis, these children are all individuals who should be respected as such. Instead of assuming, listen to and observe the child - they will tell you exactly who they are, and show you how they shine.
If you are a parent looking for ways to help your autistic child emotionally open up, strengthen their skills and confidence, and deepen your relationship, we at Courage to Connect are here to help. Please feel free to visit our website for more information on the therapeutic services we provide.
