GLENVIEW, IL — Shortly after arriving in Germany over a month ago, John Heinsen fell seriously ill, with his pancreas and kidneys impacted. Heinsen was in the country to unveil a photographic tribute to his grandfather, Walter.

Now, his family in Glenview is trying to get him back into the United States and home with the ones who love him the most. Heinsen, who has been in an ICU at a Berlin hospital since getting sick, recently had a setback after showing improvements a couple of weeks ago.

While appreciative of Heinsen's continued treatment at the hospital, where he is currently intubated, his family would like to have him return home once he stabilizes. To that end, and to help cover the increasing medical costs being endured, a GoFundMe was set up earlier this week. As of Friday afternoon, the campaign has raised more than $22,000 of a $100,000.

"We don't know when he'll be off the ventilator, out of ICU, or even when he'll come home," the campaign reads. "We hold onto our faith fiercely, thanks to the outpouring of love and support from friends and family worldwide — people John has touched and inspired, and those who have inspired him."

The family admits there is no clear timeline at this time and call the uncertainty "daunting." As Heinsen continues to fight, they say his exhibit in Hamburg is "spreading inspiration for peace and positive change globally."

"We're not just seeking financial support; we're seeking a collective strength that transcends borders and brings John closer to home so he can recover, allowing him to be present for his wonderful kids and all those who care deeply for him," the campaign continues.
