Glenview Task Force Shaves $7M Off Ice Center Referendum Proposal

After park district officials suggested a $24 million referendum, a citizen's task force voted to reduce its cost and scope.

GLENVIEW, IL — A multi-million-dollars referendum to be presented to voters in March may be smaller than the measure Glenview Park District administrators had previously proposed, as a task force of local residents recommended reducing the cost to taxpayers by $7 million.

Pioneer Press reports the Glenview Park District Citizen Task Force on Community Ice Center & Capital Projects voted to suggest a $17 million referendum to improve the Glenview Ice Center, instead of the $24 million price tag district officials had floated.

The task force determined that the cost was too high and the proposed upgrades too extravagant, according to Glenview Announcements.

The reduction to the cost of the referendum would mean the owners of a $500,000 home would pay roughly $35 more in property taxes to the district every year instead of an extra annual $50, according to the paper.

The $17 million proposal was presented to the board's finance committee Tuesday, which did not vote on it. Park district officials told the paper the committee must make a recommendation to the full board at its meeting Dec. 21 in order to go before voters on the March 20 ballot.
