Maryhaven Nursing Home Death Ruled a Homicide

The medical examiner's office said the 86-year-old woman's death was caused by craniocerebral injuries from an assault by another patient.

The death of longtime Glenview resident Mercedes Iverson at a nursing home last week is now under investigation as a homicide, according to an article published by the Sun-Times on Sunday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office told the paper that an assault by another patient was involved in her death, but officials at the could not say for sure what happened in the nursing home’s dementia unit, the story said.

Iverson was moved to hospice care at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston and was pronounced dead last Thursday. On Friday, the medical examiner’s office said Iverson’s death was caused by craniocerebral injuries from an assault, and from heart disease, according to the Sun-Times.
