Mosquito Spraying Taking Place Thursday

Adult mosquito control operations are set for Glenview, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka.

NORTHFIELD, IL — The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District announced it will conduct targeted adult mosquito control operations Thursday night in parts of Glenview, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka, mostly between Willow Road and Lake Avenue. The operations will take place between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., weather permitting. The district's mosquito control operations include truck mounted insecticide spraying and applying insecticide to vegetation in high-traffic areas for temporary protection.

Last week, West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes were found in 17 of the district's 19 traps, and Winnetka became the tenth North Shore municipality to test positive for West Nile virus. It joined Evanston, Glenview, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield and Skokie, which had already had samples test positive for the virus. Also last week, the state's first human case of West Nile virus was detected when a 67-year-old Will County man tested positive for the virus.

You can find out how many positive batches have been detected compared to how many samples have been collected in each northern Cook County town on the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District website.

While the current risk of infection is low, virus activity is projected to increase over coming weeks, the district said. It reminded residents to eliminate any items from their property that might be holding standing water, as it can provide fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.
