Mosquito Tests Positive For West Nile Virus In Glenview

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District said it's the first of the summer for the village.

GLENVIEW, IL — Mosquito experts are asking residents to take some extra precautions after the first mosquito of the season tested positive for the West Nile virus Tuesday in Glenview. According to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, batches of mosquitoes collected on July 20 and July 22 from traps in Glenview and Niles tested positive for WNV Tuesday in the organization's Northfield lab.

This year, WNV positive batches of mosquitoes have also been found in NSMAD traps in Evanston, Glencoe, Lincolnwood, Skokie and Winnetka.

While NSMAD says the risk of being infected with WNV is low at this time, it recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including using insect repellent, wearing loose fitting clothing and avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk. Residents are urged to examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked.
