Mosquitoes With West Nile Virus Found in Glenview

The insects were discovered last week, and the infected batch is the first reported case this year in northern Illinois.

GLENVIEW, IL—A batch of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus were discovered last week in Glenview, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

These mosquitoes—which were collected May 25 by the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District—are the first to test positive for the virus this year in northern Illinois, the agency reported Tuesday. A blue jay in Douglas County tested positive for West Nile on May 20, but no human cases have been reported this year, the health department says.

Last year, Illinois had 77 reported human cases of West Nile virus, and nine people died from the illness. 

The state health agency advises people to stay away from areas where mosquitoes breed, such as standing water in flowerpots, bird baths and ponds. Also, residents should use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535.
