Many adolescents and teens with autism spectrum disorders struggle to fit in with peers. As a result, these individuals may be more susceptible to the negative effects of peer pressure, such as trying alcohol or drugs. Occasionally, alcohol use in autistic teens becomes a way to rebel and establish an independent identity - it also might be used as a way to self-medicate. These habits can become dangerous if not addressed immediately and directly. When parenting a child with Asperger's, teaching them about bad decision-making is not an issue of discipline, but one that requires extra communication.
If you are a parent of a child with an autism spectrum disorder, and you feel they need more help than you can provide in fighting peer pressure or turning bad habits around, please feel free to contact our Glenview-based office at (847) 730-3042. We are here for you - let's connect.
