Temple Jeremiah to host interfaith panel on misunderstandings of sacred texts

Temple Jeremiah will host a panel discussion tackling common misunderstandings of sacred texts and the threats they pose to society in June.

Temple Jeremiah will host a panel discussion tackling common misunderstandings of sacred texts and the threats they pose to society in early June. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Scott Alexander, an authority on Islamic history and Christian-Muslim Relations, from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

“In a World of Misunderstanding, What Do the Sacred Texts Teach?” takes place on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield.

Dr. Alexander will call upon representatives from Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Bahá’í faith communities to identify passages from the Holy Books they believe have caused confusion – or even negative perceptions — among adherents or the public at large. Panelists will then help explain those passages in context, and explain how the respective, larger works can inspire the general population to understand and respect people from all faiths.

The Winnetka Interfaith Council’s Interfaith Understanding Committee is producing the panel as part of a series of educational programming intended to help congregants and the larger community recognize and seek common ground underlying the major religions.

“This program should prove informative to persons of all faiths,” said Dr. Mitchell Slotnick, president of the Winnetka Interfaith Council and a member of Temple Jeremiah. “The Committee has assembled an outstanding moderator and panelists who experts in their respective faiths’ scriptures.”

The panel discussion is free and open to the public.
