Veterans Day 2018 Observed In Glenview; What's Open, Closed

The 100th anniversary of the end of World War I is Sunday, see what's open and closed Monday.

GLENVIEW, IL — The 100th anniversary of the "War to End All Wars" is Sunday. It has been a national holiday since Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Originally known as Armistice Day Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance in 1926. President Eisenhower in 1954 signed an amendment renaming it Veterans Day and expand it to honor all veterans. This year it falls on Sunday, Nov. 11.

In Glenview, the village is holding an observance at 11 a.m. Sunday at the veterans memorial downtown at the corner of Glenview Road and River Drive. The event, sponsored by the American Legion Post 166, will include a a color guard, speeches and rifle salute, according to village staff. (It will be broadcast later by GVTV, which will also show Glenview's Gold Star Heros through Nov. 13 at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Veteran Melvin Smith at 5 p.m.)

Avoca School District 37 also invites all veterans and their families to attend the 12th annual Veterans Day Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at Avoca West School, 235 Beech Drive. (RSVP to 847-728-6800 or by email, but walk-ins welcome.)

  • Glenview Public Library: Open
  • Cook County offices, including the circuit clerk's office, courts, health department and more will be closed on Veterans Day.
  • Public schools: Open
