Village Spends $400K, Declares 'Disaster' After Snowstorm

After a costly cleanup following the recent blizzard, Village officials vote to apply for federal assistance.

Village of Glenview trustees unanimously approved a resolution declaring the village a disaster area in the wake of this month's historic

The village racked up $397,351 in cleanup costs including costs for employee overtime, removing 882 semiloads of snow and dispensing thousands of pounds of salt and gallons of calcium chloride, officials said. 

Village President Kerry Cummings and other trustees applauded local officials for their efforts assisting in the snow removal; . The state of Illinois and Cook County also declared regions affected by the blizzard as disaster areas, the resolution noted.

To help defray costs, the village is seeking federal assistance.

"Primarily our goal is to apply for 48 hours of funding and an 80-20 cost share of outside funding," explained Deputy Village Manager Chris Clark.

The resolution sets the disaster time frame from Feb. 1 to Feb. 4.
