Woman Robbed Store, Battered Staff At The Glen: Glenview Blotter

Hospital calls cops on medical marijuana user; parent issued warning after child left alone in lot: Glenview police blotter, Feb. 21–27.

GLENVIEW, IL — The following information comes from the Glenview Police Department and court records as a record of police activity, including incidents reported by the public and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Every person arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

RETAIL THEFT
A staffer at Mariano's, 25 Waukegan Road, reviewed surveillance video on Feb. 18 and discovered that a man known from shoplifting at other stores had stolen nearly $878 worth of allergy medicines and teeth whitening strips around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 after hiding them in his clothes.

IDENTITY THEFT
Someone made nearly $1,700 in unauthorized purchases from Abt Electronics, 1200 Milwaukee Avenue, which were shipped to a Chicago address and discovered on Feb. 19 by a Northbrook resident while reviewing credit reports regarding an identity theft under investigation by Northbrook police.

APPARENT SCAM
Staff at Glenview State Bank reported on the afternoon of Feb. 19 that an elderly customer had attempted to withdraw money from an account to buy iTunes gift cards to send to a Chicago address. Bank employees reported the man had tried several times to withdraw money intending to send payments for apparently illegitimate purposes.

THEFT
A resident in the 2400 block of Greenfield Drive reported on Feb. 20 that she discovered a $1,500 business check was stolen during delivery. Someone later deposited it into an account on Feb. 6 using a phone application.

NONSENSE VOICEMAIL
A teacher at Westbrook School, 1333 Greenwood Road, reported on Feb. 21 that a classroom voicemail had received a prank call around 9 p.m. on Feb. 15 containing nonsensical comments made by a youthful sounding voice.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA USE
Staff at Glenbrook Hospital reported around 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 that they discovered a patient smoking marijuana and reported to public safety officers, who seized cannabis, a pipe and a marijuana grinder. Police determined the patient had a valid medical cannabis card. The patient turned over to police a very small amount of marijuana and hospital staff held the paraphernalia for return to the patient upon discharge.

RETAIL THEFT
Employees at Target, 2241 Willow Road, reported around 11 p.m. that they noticed two male shoplifters, one who appeared to have a stolen bag. Staff discovered a display case had been forced open, with four iPads and five Apple Watches stolen for a total loss of $3,150. Police were told the suspects entered through a black sedan with a male driver, which left headed south on Lehigh Avenue.

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the first block of Wilmette Avenue reported around 1 p.m. on Feb. 22 that someone had burglarized a parked car between 6 p.m. on Feb. 21 and 1 p.m. on Feb. 22. A window was shattered and a radar detector was stolen for a loss of $600.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone smashed the rear driver's side window of a Northbrook resident's parked vehicle between 10 and 11 p.m. on Feb. 22 while its owner ate at a restaurant in the 3500 block of Milwaukee Avenue. Nothing was reported stolen and estimated damage was $200.

THEFT
Someone stole $140 in cash from the wallet of an employee of Abt Electronics after it was left in an unlocked locker.

FORGERY
A manager at Walgreens, 1403 Waukegan Road, reported around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 that an unidentified woman tried to buy items with a counterfeit $20 bill, leaving the store in a white sedan while the manager checked the bill.

IDENTITY THEFT
A resident in the 2000 block of Dauntless Drive reported on Feb. 24 that an unidentified person had used their identity to buy a Range Rover on Feb. 12 in Simsbury, Connecticut.

FRAUD
A resident in the 1800 block of Tower Drive reported there were twice overcharged for flowers ordered from a shop in Iowa. In August 2016, a purchase of 74.95 worth of flowers for delivery led to a $749.50 credit card charge. Again in 2017, another $795.50 charge was made. The owner of the business claimed a billing system malfunctioned but only credited the 2017 charge.

CAR BURGLARY ATTEMPTS
A home surveillance camera in the 1200 block Gladish Lane captured a female wearing a hooded jacket, scarf, and a purse around 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 25 who was pulling on the locked doors of two cars parked in the driveway.

CHILD ENDANGERMENT WARNING
Officers warned a parent and notified Illinois Department of Children and Family Services after receiving a report that a crying infant had been left alone inside a running car in the parking lot of the Target, 2241 Willow Road, for 30 minutes between about 10 and 10:30 a.m. The parent told police they had left their 1-year-old son inside the running car while they went to return items.

THEFT
Someone stole a doormat from outside a home in the 1200 block of Waukegean Road between 8:30 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. on Feb. 22.

SUSPICIOUS CALL, MAIL
A realtor received a call around 2 p.m. on Feb. 25 about a car for sale at a vacant address she lists for sale in the 800 block of Queens Lane. The realtor previously told police unsolicited mail had been arriving at a new construction address.

WELLNESS CHECK
A witness reported a woman hit a child on the hand and heard the child scream after they went into a bathroom shortly after 4 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Steak N Shake, 2121 Willow Road. Officers found the woman and her son, who appeared healthy and uninjured. She explained she had slapped his hand after he threatened to hit her when she said 'no' and denied striking him while in the bathroom.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Fernando Mondoza, 35, of the first block of North Branch, Northfield, was arrested shortly after 11 p.m. on Feb. 18 and charged with domestic battery after officers were called to his home to investigate a disturbance.

An 18-year-old Glenview man was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 20 and charged with driving with driving privilege suspended following a traffic stop of a car driving erratically in the area of Glenview and Drake roads.

A 31-year-old Chicago woman was cited for theft under village ordinance after staff at the Target, 2241 Willow Road, noticed her pushing a shopping cart with about $135 worth of diapers and baby clothes around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 20. Police spoke to the woman at a home in Des Plaines and she agreed to return the stolen items.

Anthony Derecho, 37, of the 1100 block of Wheeling Road, Mount Prospect, was arrested at 9 a.m. on Feb. 21 at the Glenview Police Department and charged with three counts of burglary after investigators determined he was responsible for thefts of mail from a locked lobby of a building in the 2700 block of Summit Drive reported on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 of last year.

James Murray, 36, of the 700 block of Becker Road, Glenview, was arrested at his home at 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 22 and charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault and two counts of assault following an investigation into an Feb. 17 incident at his house where police said he threw a glass at two people and threatened a third with a knife during an argument.

Lillie Buckley, 23, of the 3600 block of South Rhodes Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 4:47 p.m. on Feb. 22 on the Edens Expressway near Niles Center Road after Wilmette police pulled her over in response to a radio broadcast notifying nearby agencies she was wanted for investigation in connection with a report of attacking a loss prevention agent at the Von Mauer, 1960 Tower Drive during a shoplifting incident. She was charged with robbery, aggravated battery and felony retail theft. Police said she was found with 40 items of clothing and four candles worth about $943. Following a struggle in the back seat of her car, police said she struck a store employee trying to stop her with a car door as she drove away.

A 24-year-old Northfield woman was arrested at 4:50 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the 1800 block of Tower Drive and charged with driving without a valid license following an investigation into a traffic crash. She was also issued a citation for improper backing.

Evan Stroud, 21, of the 1400 block of Blackthorn Drive, Glenview, was arrested at 8:10 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the 1700 block of East Lake Avenue and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs and driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. He was also issued citations for speeding 21 to 25 mph above the limit, improper lane usage and improper overtaking.

Four 18-year-old Glenview residents were issued citations for minors in possession of alcohol after police got an anonymous call around 10:45 p.m. on Feb. 23 of an underage party with alcohol in the 600 block of Glenayre Drive, where officers found several people drinking in the basement.

A 22-year-old Glenview man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 after officers investigated a damaged window at a home in the 4600 block of Locust Avenue and noticed drug paraphernalia inside in plain view.
