Bail Set At $5M in Lindenhurst Gun Sale Shooting
The shooting occurred early Tuesday at a single-family home in Lindenhurst.

LINDENHURST, IL — A $5 million bail has been set for an Evanston man accused of fatally shooting a Chicago man during a robbery at a home in Lindenhurst early Tuesday, police said. Michael J. Zachery, 23, of 1600 block of Simpson Street in Evanston, has been charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with the shooting at a single-family residence in the 300 block of Teal Road. Joseph McHaney, 34, of Chicago, died in the shooting, which occurred at about 2:30 a.m.
McHaney and Zachery both went to the Lindenhurst home to purchase a gun, prosecutors said.
Shortly after arriving and speaking with the seller, the men attempted to rob the victim and struck the owner of the gun numerous times with a hammer, according to a news release from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.

The victim ended up shooting the McHaney who was pronounced deceased. Preliminary autopsy results show McHaney died from injuries caused by gunshots. Toxicology results are pending.
Someone from inside the home called 911. Lindenhurst officers arrived and apprehended Zachery, who was being held at the scene by one of the residents.
