5 Fun Outdoor Activities For Kids in Lake Co. This Month

The Lake County Forest Preserve District shared local events happening that parents may want to check out with their kids.

LAKE COUNTY, IL – The Lake County Forest Preserve District has provided some fun ideas for local parents looking for something fun to do with their children outdoors over the winter months. The tips will give kids a chance to get a little exercise while creating memories. The Lake County Forest Preserves events, many of which are free, you may want to check out:

  • "Hikin' Tykes: Evergreen Trees" takes place from 9:30 to 10:45 am, Tuesday, December 11, at the Dunn Museum and is geared for children ages 2–4 years old with an adult. Preschoolers will enjoy a nature-based story, hands-on activities, craft, and outdoor exploration, weather permitting.
  • "Playdate with Nature" runs from 1 to 2:30 pm, Tuesday, December 11, at Hastings Lake, 21155 W. Gelden Road, Lake Villa. Children of all ages, supervised by an adult, can take part in unstructured seasonal play activities. No registration is required for the free event.
  • "Tinkering Through Time: Potawatomi Art" gives participants an opportunity to learn about Potawatomi art forms, from beadwork to pottery. Children, ages 6-10, can create their own work of art during the program that runs from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, Wednesday, December 19, at the Dunn Museum. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children and includes admission to the Museum.
  • "Winter Solstice Walk and Campfire" runs 6:30 to 8 pm, Friday, December 21, at the Ryerson Woods Welcome Center. The evening will end around a cozy campfire roasting marshmallows. The cost is $5 for residents and $7 for nonresidents.
  • Spend winter break creating free winter-themed crafts from 10 am to noon, Friday, December 28, at the Dunn Museum. Families with children ages 12 and under are able to participate in the "Museum Family Crafts," which is free with Museum admission.
