7 Injured, 2 Seriously, In Antioch Golf Cart Crash

A 17-year-old driving the cart made a hard turn, police say, causing the cart to flip on the Fourth of July.

ANTIOCH, IL — Several kids have serious injuries after a crash involving a golf cart in Antioch, according to a release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. The Fourth of July accident happened around 7:45 p.m., leaving seven injured.

Police say a 17-year-old boy from Lake Barrington was driving the custom golf cart north on North Drexel Boulevard towards Grass Lake Road.

The golf cart was intended to seat six, the release says, but one person standing on the back bumper made the seventh passenger.

The driver made a sharp turn, causing the cart to roll over. All seven kids were thrown from the cart.

The driver was examined, but not taken to the hospital. The other six passengers were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries, but two of them suffered serious injuries.

The passengers were:

  • 11-year-old boy of Algonquin
  • 13-year-old girl of Algonquin
  • 13-year-old girl of Huntley
  • 15-year-old girl of Huntley
  • 16-year-old girl of Algonquin
  • 26-year-old man of Algonquin

"While it can be fun and exciting to ride in golf carts or other non-traditional vehicles, it can also be extremely dangerous," Sheriff John Idleburg said in the release.

"It is very fortunate this crash did not result in the tragic loss of life. This incident serves as a stark reminder to parents and others to always be extremely cautious when allowing children to operate non-traditional vehicles. Traffic laws must also always be adhered to," Idleburg said.
