Grayslake Attempts to Lure Butera Market to Former Piggly Wiggly Location
Village officials are working on a financial incentive package to bring the grocer into a vacant store at Center Street and Atkinson Road.

The space has been vacant since 2013 when Farmers market Place closed after a brief, six-month stint at the location, according to an earlier article Daily Herald. Prior to that, the Piggly Wiggly, which closed in 2012, had been in operation at the location for twenty years.
Butera is expected to spend between $5 million and $7 million to make improvements to the property and parking lot and, under the agreement, the village would pay $195,000 in initial funding and then up to $555,000 as part of a sales-tax sharing agreement, the Daily Herald reports. The initial funding would not be paid out if Butera did not meet current architectural standards for the building and if the store did not open and the grocer would need to return all public money if the store closes within 10 years.
Butera Market currently has 10 locations in the Chicago suburbs.
