Grayslake Bicyclist Killed By Train Identified As Woman, 60: Coroner

The Lake County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Virginia Girmscheid and said she died from blunt force injuries.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — A Grayslake woman who died after being struck by a train while riding her bicycle last week has been identified by the Lake County Coroner's Office.

Virginia Girmscheid, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision, which occurred around 8:12 p.m. June 9 near Lake Street and Hillside Avenue, according to a news release from the Lake County Coroner's Office.

The Grayslake Police Department, Grayslake Fire Department and Metra Police Department responded to the area after receiving a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a train. Girmscheid died from blunt force injuries sustained after being hit by the train, according to preliminary findings released by the coroner's office.

Metra previously said the incident involved a Canadian National freight train near the Lake Street railroad crossing. The crossing is equipped with gates and warning devices, according to Metra officials.

The Lake County Coroner's Office and Metra Police Department continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
