Lake Co. Sheriff's Office Earns Nod For Traffic Safety

From Lake Couty Sheriff's Dept.: The Lake County Sheriff’s Office earned first place in the 2017 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge for sheriff departments with 101-250 sworn officers. The annual Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge is coordinated by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) Traffic Committee and supported by a NHTSA grant, administered through IDOT’s Division of Transportation Safety as well as private funding. Sgt. Tom Struck accepted the award this morning at an awards breakfast held in Tinley Park.

The challenge targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, speeding and impaired driving. In 2017, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office conducted a series of traffic safety campaigns, including “Click It or Ticket,” “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Arrive Alive,” and “Drop It And Drive” with NHTSA and IDOT.

Sheriff Mark Curran stated, “We take traffic safety seriously. I’ve said it many times, each year we see too many lives lost to reckless actions on the roadways. We are working hard to reduce the number of lives lost and injuries incurred, due to careless driving and bad choices.”
Monthly traffic safety campaigns in 2017 included DUI Patrols, Seat Belt Safety, Distracted Driving and Construction Zone Patrols. Below are the 2017 traffic safety results:

• 615 Seat Belt Citations
• 43 Child Seat Citations
• 5,709 Speeding Citations
• 254 Impaired Driving Arrests
• 374 Illegal Cell Phone Use Citations
