Lake County Police Ticket 89 Speeders in One Day During Special Campaign

The Speed Awareness Traffic Safety Campaign was held on July 27.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies issued a total of 89 speeding citations within 24 hours during a special speed campaign held in recent weeks.

The citations were issued during the Speed Awareness Traffic Safety Campaign on July 27. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is taking a proactive approach to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists through both education and enforcement.

“Motorists need to be aware of their speed and ensure they are always traveling within the posted speed limit," Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said.

In Illinois during 2014, speed was the reason for 32.4 percent of all traffic fatalities. That’s 348 deaths for the year, or one life every 25 hours. Lives can be saved by adhering to speed limits and understanding how speeding impacts a crash.

“The Highway Patrol Division understands the dangers of speeding and continuously makes it a priority to enforce the speed limit. In fact, last year speeding and illegal cell phone citations represented 90 percent of moving violations and are a deadly combination," Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose said. "I urge motorists to slow down, drop it and drive and stay alive.”
