ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – State Treasurer Michael Frerichs joined state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, to present $28,688 to Save-A-Pet (S.A.P.) in Grayslake. The funds are the proceeds of a life insurance policy of Patricia Dwyer, who passed away in 2000, and whose life insurance benefits were safeguarded by the Illinois Treasurer's Unclaimed Property program.
The death benefits were discovered by the Illinois Treasurer’s Office during a 2014 life insurance audit. Frerichs’ office partnered with Rep. Yingling to connect with Save-a-Pet and assist the non-profit organization to recover the funds. Boone County Clerk Julie Stapler also aided in the effort.
“We are happy to return this money to Save-A-Pet,” said Frerichs. “This is a perfect example of why audits of life insurance companies are necessary. We must continue to hold bad actors accountable and help ensure the wishes of the deceased are fulfilled.”
“It’s an absolute joy to have assisted in the return of monies to a non -profit in my district,” Yingling said. “Helping the people and organizations in our area are of one of many things I prioritize as a state representative, and I encourage residents of the 62nd district to contact me if I can be of assistance to them, their families or organizations.”
“Save-A-Pet is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and the largest no-kill cat and dog rescue in Lake County that operates a full-time adoption center,” said David Diaz Development Manager. “As good stewards of our donors' contributions, we have provided a safe haven for over 62,000 abused, neglected, injured and lost cats and dogs. With this check presented to us today, we'll be able to help even more dogs and cats with medical issues and to find their forever families.”
