Matthew Fry ingested heroin, fell asleep behind the wheel of his car and then fled the scene when police showed up.

A suspect was bit by a Lake County Sheriff’s Office canine officer Tuesday evening while he was being taken into custody, police said.

Matthew Fry, 32, of Elkhorn, Wis., was found unresponsive behind the wheel of a vehicle in a traffic lane in the area of Sand Lake Road and Hunt Club Road in Old Mill Creek at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release. An ambulance crew arrived on scene and when Fry who had an active arrest warrant for a previous obstructing a peace officer charge, learned sheriff’s office deputies were also on their way, he fled the scene.

When deputies arrived, they set up a perimeter. Following a thorough search, sheriff’s deputies located Fry who again ran from them.

Fry was taken into custody without further incident. After being arrested, Fry admitted to ingesting heroin and was transported to Vista East Hospital for an evaluation.

“He was checked at the hospital after being bit, but was not admitted due to the bite,” said sheriff’s office spokesman Christopher Covelli.

Following his release, he was transported to the Lake County Jail and charged with Resisting a Peace Officer, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Class A Misdemeanor.

Fry received a $25,000.00 Recognizance Bond on the new charges and is being held at the Lake County Jail pending his transfer to Cicero Police Department on the arrest warrant.
