Village Looks at Preserving Smoke Stack at Former Grayslake Gelatin Factory

The property has environmental issues and dilapidated buildings.

GRAYSLAKE, IL - The village of Grayslake is considering how to proceed with the handling of the 10-acre Grayslake Gelatin Factory property off of Railroad Road after consultants determined there were “severe environmental issues present on the property” and that the property’s buildings were extremely dilapidated.

The village purchased the property, which has been mostly vacant for decades, for $30,000 and is now evaluating the structural condition of the factory smoke stack, which is a visible feature in town, according to a social media post.

The village posted the following update regarding the property on its Facebook page Thursday:
