• Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois recognizes outstanding volunteers with the Thanks Badge II and Honor Pin Awards (suntimesnews.com) — Highland residents can be proud that longtime volunteer Kathy Arend of Highland has earned the prestigious Thanks Badge II from Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois for more than 20 years of leadership and mentoring. Recognized at a Glen Carbon ceremony, she’s credited with strengthening local troops, training new volunteers, and helping girls gain confidence outdoors, while another volunteer from Belleville received the Honor Pin.
   

• What's that going to be on the Lewis and Clark campus in Edwardsville? (bnd.com) — Families from Edwardsville currently drive to accessible playgrounds in O’Fallon and Highland, highlighting the regional importance of inclusive play spaces. A new all-abilities playground is now under construction on Lewis & Clark Community College’s Edwardsville campus, funded largely by a local family donation and city enhancement funds, with completion expected this summer and final landscaping in the fall.
   

• Darnise Frey (riverbender.com) — Highland residents are mourning the passing of 71-year-old Darnise A. Frey, whose Celebration of Life is set for Saturday, June 27, 2026, at VFW Post 5694 in Highland. A longtime community member active in veterans’ auxiliaries and local churches, she is survived by her husband John, three sons, several grandchildren, and extended family with deep Highland ties.
