Anti-Gun Group Demonstrates at Holiday Lighting Ceremony

Group with signs urges shoppers to only shop at stores with "no guns" signs.

The strong anti-gun message in Highland Park made its way to the annual holiday lighting ceremony downtown.

During Saturday’s ceremony led by Mayor Nancy Rotering, demonstrators held posters that showed the “no guns” symbol, with the message “Shop where you see this sign.” The group then walked through the downtown shopping area with the signs.

“More than 100 Highland Park stores of all kinds are now displaying no-guns signs,” said Lee Goodman, an organizer of the demonstration. “We hope everyone will tell the stores that protect them from gun violence that their concern is appreciated. We also hope that the stores that are not yet protecting their customers will realize that people want to shop in safe places.”

The demonstration is part of the ongoing “Shop Safer” campaign that is working to have businesses display signs that tell people with concealed carry permits not to bring their guns inside.

“We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season, but wishing is not enough – everyone has to do their part to make our communities safe,” Goodman said.
