Anti-Gun Group Plans Protest at Sunset Foods Thursday

Peaceful Communities will rally against the grocer for not banning guns in its stores.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL - Peaceful Communities, a North Shore based anti-gun group, plans to protest at the Sunset Foods grocery store in Highland Park on Thursday, Jan. 21.

The protest is expected to last for an hour beginning at 10 a.m. on the sidewalk at the parking lot entrance at 1812 Green Bay Road.

“Sunset has a reputation for community involvement, but, sadly, on the issue of gun-safety, they are acting contrary to what the community wants,” said Lee Goodman, organizer of the protest, which is part of the group’s “Shop Safer” campaign.

“Illinois law allows stores to choose whether to allow guns. The people of Highland Park overwhelmingly don’t want people carrying guns where they shop. More than a hundred stores in Highland Park have already posted the signs, but Sunset refuses. Sunset should act responsibly and post the signs,” added Goodman.

Goodman says his group has met with the CEO of Sunset Foods and even after several emails from anti-gun advocates, the grocer has refused to post signs banning guns in the store.

“Sunset insists on viewing this as a political question. It’s not political. It’s a matter of public safety, and shoppers have a right to demand that the stores that they shop in are as safe as possible,” Goodman said.
