Shoplifting trio flees with fragrances; driving complaint leads to DUI arrest: Highland Park Police Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
INCIDENTS
THEFT
On Oct. 25, police were told of a June 23 incident in which someone stole a diamond and gold bangle-style bracelet worth about $1,800 during a trunk show held at the Birchwood Club, 1174 Park Ave. West.
ARSON
Someone set fire to a carboard box of garbage near the garage door of a home in the 1400 block of Calais Circle at some point between 7 p.m. Oct. 25 and 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 26.

THEFT FROM VEHICLES
A pair of catalytic converters was reported stolen from cars parked at 2900 Skokie Valley Road between 5 p.m. Oct. 22 and 10 a.m. Oct. 26. The estimated loss was $600.
SHOPLIFTING
Three unidentified thieves stole more than $1,500 worth of perfume from the Ulta Beauty store at 135 Skokie Valley Road. The trio fled in an older red Mazda four-door sedan.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged the passenger side mirror of a Mercedes Benz that had been parked in the lot of the Chase Bank branch at 255 Skokie Valley Road.
STOLEN CAR
After a motorist left their 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe running while going into the Shell gas station at 10 Skokie Valley Road around 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, someone got in and drove it away. The SUV was found about 12 hours later by Sauk Village police.
HOME BURGLARY
Someone smashed a glass sliding door of a home in the 2100 block of Linden Avenue between 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, stealing jewelry and a safe for an unspecified loss.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
James W. Fonville, 59, of the 2900 block of 31st Street, Zion, was arrested around 4 a.m. on Oct. 26 and charged with driving under the influence of drugs following a traffic stop on Skokie Valley Road at Half Day Road. Officers also issued him citations for improper lane usage and speeding.
Nicholas M. Caban, 19, of the 3400 block of Dato Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested around 3 a.m. on Oct. 28 and issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia after police smelled marijuana while checking out a suspicious vehicle parked in the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue. Records show Caban pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted possession of a controlled substance last year in exchange for a sentence of supervision, which was due to end in April.
Michelle A. Guzman-Hernandez, 24, of the 1800 block of West Garfield Boulevard, Chicago, was arrested around 4 a.m. on Oct. 31 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers were dispatched to a complaint about a driver and pulled her over in the 2900 block of Skokie Valley Road. Officers also issued Guzman-Hernandez citations for improper lane usage and driving with expired plates.
