Boaters Urge City To Postpone Road Closure Near Treatment Plant

Plan is to close west road, but committee wants it opened through 2016 boating season.

Boaters in Highland Park and the Park Avenue Task Force would like the city to postpone closing off the west road around the water treatment facility for another year to allow access through the 2016 boating season.

The task force voted this week to ask the Park District of Highland Park for an extension because a traffic study in the works by Gewalt Hamilton Associates will not be available until at least August, according to the Highland Park News.

For security reasons, the city is planning to block off a west road leading to the plan that is part of a circular, one-way access used by boaters. The planned alternative is a two-way road around the north and east side of the plant.

“I am not sure how a fall 2015 recommendation would negatively impact the power boaters for the 2016 season,” said City Manager Ghida Neukirch. “We will continue to work closely with the Park District as we progress on this matter.”
