Columnist Opposes Middle School Campus Plan

The Tribune's Lane Young says a different route should be taken by District 112 officials.

North Shore District 112 officials should not move forward with plans for a middle school campus that would include two schools that would be the educational home for all the district’s fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

That’s the opinion of Lane Young, a columnist and writer for the Chicago Tribune, who wrote on the issue in the heels of a visit D-112 officials made to Wilmette to see how it is done in a similar sized district.

Young discusses issues already brought up by concerned citizens like student transitions, traffic and grade-based schools.

He says adding a fourth transition for students from K-12 would not be a good idea.

“Even accepting their sales pitch that the quality of opportunities would go up, research has shown that each time a child makes a school transition there is some learning loss. Right now we have three such transitions between kindergarten and twelfth grade. This proposed configuration would add a fourth,” Young writes.
