Durbin, Cupich to discuss immigration reform at Temple Jeremiah
Senator Richard Durbin and Archbishop Blase Cupich will discuss immigration reform on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Temple Jeremiah

Senator Richard Durbin and Archbishop Blase Cupich will discuss immigration reform on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road in Northfield.
Moderated by Rabbi Paul F. Cohen, Temple Jeremiah’s senior rabbi, the panel discussion “Immigration Reform: A Conversation with Senator Richard Durbin and Archbishop Blase Cupich” will feature discussion on the legislative history, proposed solutions, and the moral imperatives influencing the search for a consensus on the issue of immigration reform.
“We have a rare opportunity that Sen. Durbin, who is the champion of immigration reform in our federal government, is from Illinois. Archbishop Cupich represents a large percentage of Chicagoans who are immigrants – real people suffering from the present immigration legislation,” said Barb Miller, Temple Jeremiah’s social action vice president. “We hope this event will allow all of us to learn about immigration issues and then express our feelings to our representatives.”

Durbin, a Democrat from Springfield, is Illinois’ senior U.S. Senator. He is the original sponsor of the DREAM Act and was the author of comprehensive immigration reform legislation that passed the Senate on a strong bipartisan vote in 2013.
Archbishop Cupich was installed as the ninth Archbishop of Chicago in November 2014.

This panel discussion is one of several events that Temple Jeremiah has hosted in 2014-2015 relating to immigration reform.
“Immigration is an issue very close to the Jewish people. In our congregation, the vast majority of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants,” Cohen said. “We feel an obligation as Jews who have experienced the blessings of welcome, and suffered the pain of rejection, to help new immigrants and those who are working to achieve documented status in our country.”
The immigration conversation is free and open to the public.
