Arguably the greatest rock/pop duo of the mid-70's-80's, Daryl Hall and John Oats rocked the Ravinia faithful Sunday night with an unforgettable performance, proving why they're still a musical force to be reckoned with.
With the advent of Daryl Hall's "Live From Daryl's House" morphing from an Internet sensation to a broadcast hit, the demand for a Hall & Oates tour could not have trailed too far behind. Hall's musical and culinary television show featuring celebrity music artists from every genre and decade has consistently scored higher ratings since it's inception in 07.'
Needless to say, complimented by his long-time buddy and songwriting partner (since 1972), John Oates, Daryl made sure that Ravinia became Daryl's "house"! Led by Saxophone player Charlie DeChant, (who also provided numerous show-stealing moments), Porter Carroll on percussion and vocals, Shane Theriot on lead guitar Klyde Jones on bass, Eliot Lewis on Keys, and rounding out the lineup, Brian Dunne, Hall & Oates brought their best to Ravinia, Chicagoland's liveliest outdoor music venue.
Opening the festivities with "Maneater," Daryl Hall wove a vocal tapestry that sealed Hall & Oates legacy of over three decades of pop/rock music. Hall's vocal chops are a timeless gift that still retains both it's range and edge. In fact, Hall's live bluesy edge converted several of their tight pop tunes into a more satisfying performance than their studio masters.
With John Oates high harmonies and guitar sweetening, the blend of Hall, Oates, Jones, Lewis and DeChant killed it Sunday night to the delight of the Ravinia faithful.
From the classic "Sarah Smile" to crowd pleasing favorites like "Private Eyes," Hall & Oates had both the pavilion and the thousands relaxing on the lawn while singing in unison. While my personal favorite was "Kiss On My List", "Rich Girl," "Out of Touch" and the great: "I Can't Go For That," (No can do), had the audience dancing, clapping in unison and filling in the gaps that the band left open.
Hall & Oates generously treated their loyal following to three encores which amped up the packed pavilion and thrilled first-timer's alike. Hailed as the top-selling duo of all-time, (even to this day!) Hall & Oates are clearly not as in it for the money, but more for the "love of the game."
On the heel's of their well-deserved Hall of Fame induction and legendary performance, Daryl Hall and John Oates, continue to tear the fire out of their material and serve up meaningful performances like Sunday night's to their appreciative fans.
The staff and management at Ravinia ran Sunday evening's show seamlessly, again proving why they remain the Midwest's #1 choice for Best Outdoor Venue.
