Highland Park To Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary With Ceremony

The event will be held on Saturday, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, and will honor the lives lost.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The City of Highland Park along with other local organizations, will host a ceremony on Saturday, marking the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in a solemn remembrance of the events that resulted in the deaths of 2,977 people.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Fire Station No. 33, which is located at 1130 Central Ave. The event is being coordinated through a partnership with the City of Highwood, the Highland Park Public Library, North Shore School District 112, the Park District of Highland Park and Township High School District 113.

The event will include the singing of the national anthem, comments from Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering and Highwood Mayor Charlie Pecaro. The Highland Park Fire Department will participate in a Last Alarm Bell ceremony to remember the lives of those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and at the airline crash site in Pennsylvania.

Chief of Police Lou Jogmen and Fire Chief Joe Schrage will also speak at the ceremony, which will also include the Police and Fire Honor Guards, and performances by Highland Park High School trumpet players.

Although the event will take place outdoors, attendees are encouraged to wear masks in compliance with ongoing Centers For Disease Control and Prevention recommendations. The ceremony will also be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
