Highland Park High School One of Top 10 in Illinois: U.S. News

School was ranked higher than 600 others and all on the North Shore except for two.

More than 600 Illinois high schools were considered in the latest rankings published by the U.S. News & World Report on Tuesday, but only seven were found to be better than Highland Park High School.

HPHS’ No. 8 ranking trailed only Northside College Preparatory High School, Walter Payton Community Preparatory High School, Jones Prep High School, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School and Lane Tech High School - all of Chicago and nearby schools Adlai E. Stevenson High School (No. 5) and Deerfield High School (No. 7) in the state.

In examining Highland Park, the report showed 78 percent of its students as proficient in reading while 77 percent are efficient in mathematics. The school’s College Readiness Index is 60.2. The school touted a 313 national rank and a STEM ranking of 114.

Schools are evaluated based on overall student performance on state assessments, Advanced Placement tests and International Baccalaureate exams. The ranking also takes into account how well schools educate black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students.

Twenty-five percent of Highland Park’s student body is of a minority background.

According to the report, Illinois has many schools ranked in 2015 among the U.S. News Best High Schools, including 17 gold medal schools, 69 silver medal schools and 91 bronze medal schools.
