Deerfield High School One Of Top 10 in Illinois: U.S. News

Annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report only has one North Shore school ranked higher.

More than 600 Illinois high schools were considered in the latest rankings published by the U.S. News & World Report on Tuesday, but only six were found to be better than Deerfield High School.

Deerfield’s rank trailed only Northside College Preparatory High School, Walter Payton Community Preparatory High School, Jones Prep High School, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School and Lane Tech High School - all of Chicago and Adlai E. Stevenson High School in nearby Lincolnshire, which was ranked No. 5 in the state.

In examining DHS, the report showed 93 percent of its students proficient in mathematics and 92 percent in reading. Its national rank is 246 and STEM rank 146.

Schools are evaluated based on overall student performance on state assessments, Advanced Placement tests and International Baccalaureate exams. The ranking also takes into account how well schools educate black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students.

Nine percent of Deerfield’s student body is of a minority background. Each grade level includes somewhere between 406 and 430 students.

According to the report, Illinois has many schools ranked in 2015 among the U.S. News Best High Schools, including 17 gold medal schools, 69 silver medal schools and 91 bronze medal schools.
