HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Seven people were killed on Monday after a shooter opened fire on an Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, Illinois. In addition to the death toll, at least 30 people were wounded during the mass shooting at the Chicago suburb. People attending the parade initially mistook the loud sound of gunshots for fireworks, but upon realizing what was happening the revelers, made up predominately of parents with strollers and children on bikes, fled in terror.

An hourslong manhunt quickly ensued, reported AP News, resulting in authorities pulling over 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo III just five miles north of the scene. During a news conference on Monday, Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said “several of the deceased victims” died at the scene, while one was taken to a hospital and died there.
