William R. Pomper “Uncle Bill”, 92, life-long resident of Highland Park, IL passed away peacefully on June 24, 2015. William was born on April 3, 1923 to Elva and Herman Pomper. He graduated from Deerfield Shields High School, Highland Park in 1941 and went to the University of Iowa for two years. After two years of college, Bill joined the Air Force. He received his wings in 1944 and flew B-24’s and B-29’s. After serving our county, Bill went back to school at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL; where he graduated with his Bachelor’s degree. In 1946, Bill entered the family business, Otto Pomper Inc., with his brother Fred. Bill worked there until he retired in 1990, when the business reached 100 years old. William was a master woodworker and world traveler, he also enjoyed golf and tennis. Beloved husband of Ruth for 34 years; loving brother to Frederick (Virginia) Pomper; dear brother-in-law to Nancy; fond uncle and great uncle to William Jr., Linnae, and Gavin. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 10:00 am until time of service 11:00 am at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Rd. Highland Park, IL 60035. Interment Northshore Garden of Memories, North Chicago. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Chicago Botanic Gardens, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL or to a charity of your choice.
