HPHS Alum Jason Goldstein Drafted By Dodgers; Opts to Remain at University of Illinois

The 2012 Giant alum is coming off a banner junior season and will continue the momentum for the Fighting Illini.

Jason Goldstein, a 2012 Highland Park High School graduate, was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball draft on June 10, but he has already informed the team he plans to return to the University of Illinois for his senior season.

The junior catcher, selected 522nd overall, is coming off a year in which he started 57 games, batted .286 with eight home runs and 47 RBI and was part of the Fighting Illini’s first-ever Super Regional appearance with an overall record of 50-10-1.

“It was a dream come true,” Goldstein told the Highland Park News. “I kind of knew I wasn’t going to sign when they drafted me, but it was awesome that they would give me an opportunity. There’s definitely a pride factor and great to put the northern suburbs and North Shore on the map for baseball.”

Dan Casey, head coach of the Highland Park baseball team who coached Goldstein from 2009-2012, said the Dodgers’ selection provides “a tremendous sense of pride” because Jason “did so much for our program when he was here.”

“He still gives back to the kids in the community. ... It was a pleasure to coach a kid who was your best player and put in the time. He cared about our program and still cares about the program,” Casey said.
