Increasing 911 Surcharge Could Relieve Property Taxes in Highwood

City to again mull moving charge up form $1 to $2 a month.

A $1 increase in the 911 surcharge could mean lessening the pressure on property taxes in Highwood, according to a Mayor Charles Pecaro quote in the Highland Park News.

Although increasing the city’s 911 surcharge from $1 to $2 a month has failed to get voter support in the past, Pecaro says it would put some relief on the general fund, which would “relieve some of the pressure on property taxes.”

The extra $1 per month charge on each landline translates into $52,000 per year, less than the $215,000 the city expects to pay for police and fire emergency communications.
