Mold Remediation Underway At HPHS Ahead Of First Day Of Classes

Newly discovered mold inside Highland Park High School led the District 113 board to pay more than $94,000 to clean it up before Monday.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — A mold remediation firm is rushing to complete a cleanup at Highland Park High School before students arrive later this week. At an emergency meeting Monday, the Township High School District 113 board approved a $94,112.65 no-bid contract with Brouwer Brothers Services to get rid of mold found recently in a science area of HPHS.

Co-interim superintendents Ben Martindale and Linda Yonke said the cause of the mold had not been established, Pioneer Press reported. However, contractors expect to be able to completely remove the mold by Friday, when freshmen orientation is set to begin. Monday is the first day of classes for all HPHS students.

The emergency meeting took place following a hearing on the district's $95.3 million 2018-2019 budget, which was adopted during the board's regular meeting, according to a district spokesperson.
