More Than 50 Warnings Issued to Bicyclists in Highland Park
Recent multi-municipality crackdown has produced results.

Highland Park police issued 51 warnings to bicyclists during the recent 10-day bike safety campaign initiated by authorities there and in Deerfield, Highwood, Bannockburn and Lake Forest.
Frequent observations of cyclists disobeying the red lights at St. John’s and Laurel avenues were noticed by Highland Park Police Sgt. Chris O’Neill, who also said 13 of the 51 given warnings have already completed an online safety class from the League of Illinois, which was required as part of the warning.

“It went really well. We made a lot of contact with people, had a lot of support from residents, the weather was good and residents were thankful and had good feedback,” O’Neill told the Daily North Shore.
O’Neill said that while both bicyclists and drivers have been at fault in recent incidents, cyclists can cause accidents when they reach speeds of 25 mph. Two written warnings in six month could result in a ticket of $120.
