Featured obituary:

With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Donald Edward Manhard, Sr., loving husband, beloved father, proud grandfather, dear brother and friend on Thursday, April 4th at 2:20 am at the age of 87. Born to Elgin & Jeanette (Olnhausen) in 1932, he was raised in Rock Island, IL where he played football, basketball, and set the school record in the Pole Vault. He graduated from Northwestern University where he met his wife Jeanie (Angelos) Manhard on a blind date her first week of college. Theirs was a true love story that lasted 62 years & mirrored their favorite movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Together, they raised their family in Deerfield, IL and enjoyed their later years in Lincolnshire, IL, Lake Geneva, WI and Longboat Key, FL. He enlisted in the army in 1954 and was a member of the 82nd airborne division as a paratrooper. Don founded Donald Manhard Assoc., a consulting civil engineering company in 1972 and worked with his sons, daughter and grandsons up until his death.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanie; three children, Peter of Vernon Hills, Don Jr. (Tricia) of Glencoe and Katie (Donn) Pall of Bloomingdale; six grandchildren, Jamie, Donnie III, Jenny, Michael, Mark and Alexis, who endearingly referred to him as Papou; and brothers, Robert (Kathy) of Aurora, CO and Elgin Jr (Sally) of Edina, MN. and uncle of many nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered for his love of family, kindness, honesty, ethics and entrepreneurial spirit (such as owning a ski hill, teenage nightclubs, pants and record stores, and flea markets). Don loved boating, golfing, travel and winning at all costs.

Visitation will be Monday, April 8 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9 both at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Road in Highland Park. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
