Lieutenant Colonel Sanford Leon Parker, age 83, of Evanston passed February 3, 2018 at home surrounded by love and tranquility.

Sanford (Leon) was born to the late Clinton and Marguerite Parker, August 29, 1934 in Notasulga, Alabama. Sanford was the fifth child of six. He graduated from Tuskegee Highschool Institute in 1952. In 1957 he received a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering, a commission in ROTC from Tuskegee University and obtained a Master's in Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois University in 1981.
He married Dolores (Lois) on January 31, 1959 in Zion. They celebrated their 59th anniversary Jan 31st of this year. Together they raised five children, moving his family from Chanute Air Base, Rantoul, Il, Pullman, WA, overseas in the Philippine Islands, Old Orchard Beach, ME, Liverpool, NY, Lynchburg, VA and eventually settling in Evanston.
He leaves as his legacy five children: Cheryl Parker (Dawud Jahi) of Notasulga, Alabama, Laurence Parker (Georgia) of Evanston, Ronald Parker of Evanston, Eric Parker (Donna) of Skokie, and Jason Parker (Brenda) of Evanston. He also leaves to cherish his memory one sibling Ernest Ware of Chicago IL, Grandchildren Monique (Terrance), Kasheam (Mariam), Kelly Jr. (Kassie), Kyle (Andrea), Monica, Kamal, Ashley, Caleb, Adil, Dylan, Olivia, Evan and Ava. Great grandchildren Rasheed, Aiyanna, Kasheam Jr., Johnny, Rashaad, Meilan and Mariana. And a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by Calvin Parker (brother), Joseph Parker (brother), Josephine Parker (sister), Everett Parker (brother), Zephora (granddaughter), and Gabriela (granddaughter).
Sanford was a long time member of the US Air Force maintaining various positions in active duty from 1958 to Nov. 1969 and retiring from Air Force Reserve Aug. 1981 with the rank of Lt. Col. He was included in the 1969 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America for outstanding civic work. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service. In the civilian world Sanford was an engineer working at companies such as General Electric as Headquarters Salesman/Contract Administrator, the Dept. of Energy Contract Specialist and the US Railroad Retirement Board as Contract Administrator. He retired from the US RRB in May 1993.
He also participated in community service organizations such as US Jaycees, NAACP and Newcomers Club.
Sanford loved his family and provided a secure life for them. He was an avid lover of sports- in particular softball, baseball, football and track. He won 2nd fastest in the State of Alabama when in high school. He was always very active in coaching and/or supporting his family and all their activities, always encouraging them to learn. He clipped and saved many newspapers articles as he was proud of his children's achievements as they grew into adulthood. He was a giver. He didn’t necessarily like you to ask, but if he saw the need, he offered on many occasions, supporting camping trips, Christmas parties and gatherings for all to enjoy.
He was a fixer upper, a teacher. If he was fixing something he had you right there showing you how to do it, so next time you knew how to do it yourself.
He believed in NO Idols. “You are just as good as anybody and can do whatever you put your mind to,” he would say.
Lieutenant Colonel Sanford Parker lived a full life and will be missed dearly.
