Judith Penelope Peine (Penny) Kohlmeyer was born in Chicago, but spent most of her childhood in New York, in the village of Patchogue on Long Island. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Arlene Peine and sister to the late Josh Peine. Penny attended Kathryn Gibbs College in New York City and Stony Brook University. In her early career she worked at Brook Haven National Laboratory before returning to Chicago to join the trust department at Continental Bank as a training specialist. At the Bank she met, then married Glenn Kohlmeyer. With her husband, Penny lived in Germany and the UK; they traveled extensively, returning to Chicago in 1973. In 1983 Penny and Glenn moved to Winnetka, where they have resided ever since.
Penny was active in community affairs in Winnetka, serving on the board of the Winnetka Historical Society and the Women’s Board of the Winnetka Community House. While at the Historical Society she was one of the key figures in the design and publication of the Society’s Gazette. For the last several decades Penny volunteered at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe where she served as team leader for operation of the Garden’s Bloom Cart, the flower display that greets incoming visitors at the front door of the Gateway Center. Keeping the Bloom Cart filled with beautiful seasonal flowers was a job she loved with a passion. In 2004 she was named the Botanic Garden’s Volunteer of the Year. Her love of plants and flowers was evident at home as well, where she transformed both front and back yards into areas of natural beauty.
With her brother Josh, Penny operated a small boutique scents and cosmetics business, Clear Light--the Cedar Company, in the village of Placitas, New Mexico. When Josh died in 2006, Penny took over as CEO and operated the company until its sale in 2016.
Penny loved to bake—she was an inveterate recipe and cook book collector—and she loved to entertain. Her summer dinner parties on the back deck are the stuff of legend in the neighborhood. Combining her love for baking, her curiosity for new ideas and her volunteer activities, Penny kept her friends and fellow volunteers well supplied with edible treats at the holidays and throughout the year.
Penny loved dogs, especially big dogs, and particularly Doberman Pinschers, of which over the years, she had six. She is survived by her husband Glenn and the last of the Dobermans, Cheer. They miss her terribly.
A Celebration of Penny’s life will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 in the Pullman Room of the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL 60022.
Memorials may be made to the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL 60022.
