Featured Obituary:
Mary Margaret Ottenheimer Laport was born on January 31, 1937 in Chicago IL. She was preceded in death by her parents Andrew “Ottie” and Margaret “Marge” O’Dea Ottenheimer, her brother Joseph, and former spouse Charles Laport.
Mary graduated from Saint Scholastica and Marquette University. Mary had a fun group of school friends and maintained many relationships throughout her life as she moved from Chicago and back again.
Mary met and married Charles Laport in the late 1950’s and was a loving mother to Michael, Lisa, Margaret aka Peggy, and Peter. Michael married Ginna and resides in California, Lisa lives in Texas, Margaret lives in Chicago, and Peter married Laura and resides in Maryland. Peter and Laura have 4 children, and Mary was a proud grandmother to Patrick, Andrew, Katie, and Libby.
Mary had a 25-year career working for GTE Directories. She moved to Arlington, Texas in the mid-1980’s when the company relocated the headquarters to Dallas. Mary was divorced, kids were in college, and she always said she wanted to get out of the cold. In her last role at GTE, Mary traveled internationally working with technology groups to develop the yellow pages platform on the Internet.
When Mary retired, she volunteered in the Arlington community. Mary was a member and past officer of the Arlington Women’s Club serving as Treasurer. Mary created Giving Circles that funded many educational scholarships. She worked tirelessly on a project that launched a 2012 book of essays on the early years of Arlington, written by author O.K. Carter. Mary also volunteered with PALS (Partners of the Arlington Life Shelter) to expand community awareness and provide additional financial support to the work of the Arlington Life Shelter supporting homeless families.Read more from Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
