William Arthur Crowle, of Vernon Hills, formerly of Deerfield, passed away on March 16, 2019. Preceded in death by his parents, William Crowle and Elaine (Schubert) Crowle. He is survived by his cousins Vicki Pacholski (Robert), Susan Pierce (Steve), Paul Pacholski (Mealdui), Matthew Pacholski, Mark Pacholski, Shannon Favela (George), Jim Fikar (Sharon), Mary Ann Baiers (Don), Joe Smetana, Jr. (Susan), Cathy Smetana, Barbara Pliml (Jim), and Roger Rybarczyk (Monica). He was cherished by and will be missed by countless friends, musicians and music lovers of every variety throughout our region. Bill was born in Berwyn and lived most of his life in Deerfield.

William Crowle began piano study at the age of four, and violin at the age of six. While attending Deerfield High School, he accompanied the choirs, was musical director for stage plays, composed and arranged music for school productions and accompanied professional and community theatre. He attended the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY where he studied composition with Joseph Schwantner, Samuel Adler and Warren Benson, and piano with Maria Luisa Faini. After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree in composition, he pursued graduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. There he studied composition with Frederick Fox and Bernhard Heiden among others, and piano with Enrica Cavallo-Gulli. In addition, he taught theory and aural skills as an Associate Professor and performed in the Mew Music Ensemble at Trinity Christian College. He was elected into the National Music Honorary Society, Pi Kappa Lambda and received both Master and Doctorate degrees in composition with high distinction. Bill studied organ with Richard Enright and Leon Nelson and began his career as staff organist in 1985 at Christ United Methodist Church, Deerfield, IL, a post held until 1994.

Bill, a consummate and multifaceted musician, excelled in performance and passion at pipe organ, piano, keyboard and harpsichord. He was the 25 year tenured accompanist for worship, concert and rehearsals at First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield while he also served in parallel years as accompanist to Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism in Highland Park. Bill taught private piano lessons for years and was the staff accompanist for the music department at Vernon Hills High School until his illness this past year.

Bill was a sought after accompanist and performer around the entire Chicago region giving solo recitals and concerto performances, as well as accompanying soloists and ensembles. His music blessed countless weddings, memorials, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, private parties and public celebrations. He thrilled to work with young people who were training up to be musicians in both instrument and voice. He was the inspiration and friend of countless individuals and groups who looked to him for musical counsel as well as lessons in humility and kindness. Bill loved people. He loved the church and the synagogue. He loved to hike in desert and mountain terrain. He loved taking a spin in his sparky red Mustang, and he loved sharing his life and love of music with countless friends and faith communities who will all miss him terribly.

When not offering his gifts at performance, Bill was often composing. He wrote works for treble choir, piano, recorders, Orff instruments, guitar, bass guitar and percussion. Bill’s original compositions include Motets d’Enfants, Gloria, A Lesson from Hillel, Festival Overture, and other pieces yet to be performed. His versatility as a musician spanned musical genre that stretched from classical, to jazz, to baroque, rock and roll, spiritual and beyond. His enthusiasm and passion for music and for excellence was a gift generously given to his community and his Lord, whom he served joyfully to the end of his days.

Services were held. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Mentor Singer Program of 1st Presbyterian Church of Deerfield, supporting young musicians in sacred music. Bill was a deeply faithful man, an incredible, beloved musician, a humble child of God — and will be deeply missed by family, friends, community and music lovers far and wide.
