Featured Obituary:
The world lost a great man on Friday, April 1st. Marvin Maurice Baker was born on December, 6, 1939 in DeKalb, IL. He was the oldest child of Margaret and Maurice Baker. He was a 3 sport athlete at DeKalb High School and went on to play football at Northern Illinois University where he graduated with a degree in Education. He always kept close ties with his hometown friends and DeKalb remained in his heart.
He moved to Highwood, IL to start his first job as an elementary P.E. teacher at Oak Terrace in 1963. He later went on to teach at Lincoln School in Highland Park. His teaching career spanned over 35 years. In addition to being a gym teacher he was also a beloved coach of baseball and basketball and Highwood Small Fry. So many kids played Bakerball through the years, including 4 of his grandchildren. Mr. Baker believed that everyone should be able to play sports no matter what your talent. He made sure each child that he taught or coached felt special and Mr. Baker had a knack for remembering every child’s name even when they were grown and had children of their own.
Once he retired he became a full time #1 Papa. He treasured watching every single football, softball, baseball, volleyball and basketball game. He loved going to Disney with his grandkids and sharing his love of 50’s music. He has a special connection to each one, including his youngest grandson who he’s been able to see grow over the last two years.Read more via Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home »
