Featured obituary:
Dr Raul M Heredia, of Highland Park, Ill, a self-less, highly respected, retired surgeon and pathologist, passed away on March 4, 2019, into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was surrounded by his adoring daughter Alma, loving granddaughter Samantha, and devoted son-in-law Robert.
Born in Mexico City in 1933, his medical career spanned for over four decades. After graduating from the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), he and his wife, Bertha, emigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled permanently in the Chicago area.

Upon completing his internship and residency at the Edgewater Hospital on the north side of Chicago, Dr. Heredia went on to practice primarily at Mt. Sinai Hospital , in addition to being on the staff at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in North Chicago, and South Shore Hospital. He also taught at The Rush Medical School.
In June of 2011, at the age of 78, without regard to his own safety, he found himself in a unique non-hospital heroic situation when he saved the life of a 90 year old woman, who had fallen on the Metra train tracks in Glenview. He tried to lift and move her out of the path of the fast approaching commuter train, but still recovering from two recent strokes, he didn’t have enough strength alone. Fortunately, a younger gentleman assisted Dr. Heredia in moving the elderly woman out of danger seconds before the train came barreling through. Even after receiving accolades of recognition for his bravery from various sources, including Metra, the City of Highland Park, radio and television stations that covered this story of bravery, he remained remarkably humble as always.
Dr. Heredia is predeceased by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of nearly sixty years, Bertha, who passed away in November 2017. Also predeceasing him are his parents, Julio and Carmen, brothers Fernando and Julio, and sister Gloria. Deeply loved by family, friends, neighbors and colleagues, he is survived by his daughter Alma, son-in-law Robert, granddaughter Samantha, canine-son Chico, sons Raul and Alex, daughters-in-law and five other grandchildren. In addition he is survived by his sister Alicia, brother Jorge (Alma), brother Miguel Angel (Alejandra), and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 121 E Maple Ave. in Libertyville.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the American Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, and St. Joseph Catholic Church-Libertyville.
